PROSPERITY — The driver who was involved in a single vehicle wreck on July 2 died due to his injuries on Saturday at Prisma Health Richland, according to Lance Corporal Justin Sutherland with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Newberry County Coroner Laura Kneece identified the driver as 55-year-old Deryl Eugene Burnette, of Calhoun County.
The accident occurred around 3:14 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2 on S.C. 391, near Mt. Pilgrim Church Road — roughly a mile from the Town of Prosperity. Sutherland said Burnette was driving a 2007 Chevrolet van, and while traveling south on S.C. 391, ran off the road, striking a culvert, overturning the van. Sutherland said there was also a juvenile passenger in the van; neither were wearing a seat-belt.
Both Burnette and the juvenile were transported to Prisma Health Richland — the status of the passenger has not been announced.
An autopsy was performed on Saturday, July 6 and it was determined that Burnette died of blunt force trauma of chest, according to Kneece.
This incident remains under investigation by the Newberry County Coroner’s Office and South Carolina Highway Patrol.
