NEWBERRY COUNTY — The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) plans to replace the S.C. 72 Bridge over CSX Railroad in Newberry County. Specifically, the project is situated in the Town of Whitmire along the portion of S.C. 72 (Church Street) between Owens Avenue to the west and Market Street to the east. The purpose of this proposed project is to address structural and functional deficiencies in the existing bridge by replacing it with a new bridge that meets current design standards.
There will be a public information meeting on Dec. 5 from 5-7 p.m. at the Whitmire Community Center, located at 1222 Glenn Street, Whitmire. The meeting will have a drop-in style format with displays for viewing and citizens will have the opportunity to provide written comments. Project information, including meeting materials and comment forms will also be available on the project website or by visiting the SCDOT website (http://www.scdot.org, Programs & Projects, Current Projects, Midlands).
The purpose of the proposed project is to address structural and functional deficiencies in the existing bridge on S.C. 72 (Church Street) over CSX Railroad by replacing it with a new bridge that meets current design standards. According to the National Bridge Inventory: Structure Inventory and Appraisal Report, the current bridge was constructed in 1935 and is classified as structurally deficient. The goal of this meeting is to receive public input on the project approach and to gather information from the public or any interested organization on historic or cultural resources in the area. Maps and drawings of the proposed improvements will be available, and attendees may ask questions and provide comments regarding the possible social, economic, and environmental effects of the project. Engineering and environmental personnel from SCDOT and its consultant will be available to discuss the project with interested citizens on an individual basis.
